So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. 2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace. 5 But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised to us. 6 For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.
All I can say is “thank God for the New Covenant”. Its enough to make a grown man cry thinking about what I don’t need to do any more. So here is my question: If I am so relieved that I don’t need to get circumcised why do I try to imprison myself with other religious rituals. Why do I feel guilty about my imperfections, why do I feel unworthy if I have not performed up to some imagined standard? I feel guilty because in some ways I have returned to the “miserable spiritual principles of this world”. In this world you only get what you’ve earned, only the best get ahead. But in the freedom of Christ I get what I don’t deserve and have not earned. I am ahead before I even start. The same applies to all who simply have faith in the finished works of Christ. His victory is yours, His holiness is yours, His standing with the Father is yours… imagine getting all that before you even begin. These things are our floor, we can only build up from here. Have a great day
